Respiratory & Halamang Gamot Flashcards
preventing a histamine response
and reduces nasopharyngeal secretions
antihistamine
chemical released during inflammation that increase secretions and narrows airways
histamine
First generation histamine
Diphenhydramine (benadryl)
Second generation antihistamine
a. Cetirizine
b. Fexofenadine
c. Loratadine
Less sedation drugs
2nd generation antihistamine
Stimulate alpha adrenergic receptors
Nasal Decongestants
Nasal Decongestants
a. shrinks nasal mucous membranes
b. Reduces nasal secretions
Drug to Drug interaction: Halothane anesthesia
severe CV prob
Systemic decongestants
Do not use for more than 5 days
Intranasal Glucocorticoids (STEROIDS)
dec inflammation activity in the bronchial wall inhibits constriction of airway
Side effect of intranasal glucocorticoids
Local burning
Act on the cough control center in the medulla to suppress the cough reflex
Antitussive
Contraindication: intranasal glucocorticoids
COPD
Side effect: intranasal glucocorticoids (steroids)
Drowsiness
Intranasal Glucocorticoids
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide (benylin)
Loosen bronchial secretions by reducing surface tension of secretions which decreased viscosity which increases cough to clear airway
Expectorants
Example: Intranasal Glucocorticoids
Guaifenesin (robitussin)
Increase liquefy resp secretions to aid in the clearing of airway for pts who are coughing thick, tenacious secretions
Mucolytics
Facilitates smooth muscle relaxation causing bronchodilation inhibits mast cell degranulation
BRONCHODILATORS: BETA ADRENERGIC AGONIST : Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate (cAMP)
Antidote for acetaminophen overdose
Acetylcystine
cAMP
dilates bronchioles
