What is respiratory failure?
A
Inadequate gas exchange resulting in hypoxia

A
PaO2 less then 8kPa

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 respiratory failure?
A
Type one- hypoxia withou hypercapnia
Type two- hypoxia with hypercapnia

What causes type 1?
A
V/Q mismatch eg pneumonia, asthma, PE, oedema

What causes type 2?
A
Alveolar hypoventilation with or with out V/Q mismatch eg. asthma, COPD, sleep apnoa myestenia gravis guillian barre kyphoscoliosis

Symptoms of hypoxia?
A
Breathlessness Cyanosis Confusion Acidosis Chronic- cor pulmonale, Po hypertension

Symptoms of hypercarnia?
A
headache drowsi flap or tremour bounding pulse peripheral vasodilation
