Respiratory Drugs Flashcards
Inhaled corticosteriod examples
Beclometasone
Budesonide
Inhaled corticosteriod indications
Asthma when reliever is not sufficient
Inhaled corticosteriod mechanism of action
Reduces mucosal inflammation
Widens airways
Reduced mucus production
Reduces exacerbations
Inhaled corticosteriod ADR
Candidiasis
Horse voice
Inhaled corticosteriod cautions
Pneumonia risk possible in COPD at high doses
Inhaled corticosteriod DDI
Very few if taken correctly
SABA example
Salbutamol
Fast acting LABA example
Formoterol
Slow acting LABA example
Salmeterol
When to use SABA inhaler ?
Symptom relief through reversal of bronchoconstriction when required
Beta agonist mechanism of action
Bind to beta 2 receptors and cause activation of adenylyl cyclase increasing production of cAMP. This increases activity of PKA and causes bronchial smooth muscle relaxation.
It also increases mucus clearance by action of cilia
Beta agonist ADR
Tachycardia Sweating Palpitations Anxiety Tremor
Beta agonist cautions
LABA should only be prescribed alongside inhaled corticosteriods
Beta agonist DDI
Beta blockers reduce effects on beta agonists
Montelukast drug class
Leukotriene receptor antagonist
