Respiratory and circulatory system Flashcards
What is circulatory system
Organ system that is made up of the heart, blood vessels, and blood
Main function of circulatory system
Main function is transportation of hormones, nutrients and wastes
What is blood
Type of connective tissue
4 parts of blood
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
plasma
Red blood cells are also known as
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells contain a protein called
Hemoglobin
White blood cells are also known as
Leukocytes
White blood cells function
Fight and destroy bacteria and viruses
Platelets are also known as
Thrombocytes
Platelets function
Cell fragments that help the blood clot, seal wounds and stop bleeding
Plasma description and function
Protein rich liquid that carries blood cells, dissolved wastes, and nutrients
How many chambers heart organized in
Organized in 4 chambers
What are blood vessels?
A network of tubes that carry blood through the body
3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
What do arteries do?
Take blood away from heart
What are capillaries
connections between arteries and veins
What do veins do
Take blood from tissues back to heart
Function of the respiratory system
Supplies O2 to cells and removes CO2
Nasal Cavity Structure?
Narrow, hollow passage
Nasal Cavity Function?
Mucous moistens air
Cilia filter out debris
Trachea structure?
Windpipe
Surrounded by cartilage rings
Trachea function
Open passage for air
Bronchi structure?
Lined with cilia(for filtering)
Function
Passageway from trachea to each lung
Bronchioles Structure
Smaller tubes branching off from bronchi
Bronchioles function?
Branching allows oxygen to reach all parts of lung
Alveoli Structure?
Tinny, hollow air sacs
In grape-like sacs
Surrounded by capillaries (small blood vessel)
Alveoli function?
Sit of gas exchange(oxygen and carbon dioxide) between blood and lungs
Gas exchange
Oxygen passes from blood vessels into alveoli, then is exhaled out
Breathing - inhale
Diaphragm contracts and moves down
Ribs moves up and out
air is pulled into the lungs
Breathing - exhale
Carbon dioxide builds up in the blood, signal goes to the brain, the brain sends a message to your lungs to breathe
