What is definition of a respiratory alkalosis?
A
pH > 7.45 and PaCO2 < 35 mmHg

What are the clinical features of respiratory alkalosis?
A
- Tachypnea
- CNS - confusion, apathy, tetany, seizures
- Tachycardia
- Hypokalemia, hypocalcemia

What is the differential diagnosis for respiratory alkalosis?
A
- Iatrogenic - excessive ventilation
- Hypoxia (compensatory tachypnea) - pneumonia, pulmonary edema, aspiration, pulmonary embolus
- Pregnancy
- Fever/sepsis
- High altitude
- Pain/anxiety
- CNS disease - stroke, meningitis
- Hepatic failure
- Salicylate overdose

What is the management of respiratory alkalosis?
A
- Identify underlying condition
- If on ventilator, decrease minute ventilation
- Follow ABG
