Hyperthermia Flashcards
1
Q
What is the definition of hyperthemia?
A
A core body temperature > 38.3 degrees celsius (101 degrees F).
2
Q
What minimum body temperature is associated with heat stroke?
A
> 40 degrees (104 degrees F)
3
Q
What is the normal variability of body temperature in celsius?
A
Normal body temperature is approximately 37 degrees celsius with normal variability of 0.5 to 1 degree celsius.
4
Q
What are the clinical features of hyperthermia?
A
- Hot, dry skin
- N/V
- Headache
- Hypotension, tachycardia, tachypnea
- Syncope
- MS changes, sz, coma
5
Q
What is the differential for hyperthemia?
A
- Infection
- Malignancy
- Autoimmune
- Non-infectious: MH, NMS, thyroid storm, drug-induced, pulmonary embolism, hepatitis, withdrawal from alcohol, opiates, or benzodiazepines
- External heating
6
Q
What is the management of hyperthermia?
A
- Verify temperature is real
- Assess vital signs and mental status to determine urgency
- Narrow differential diagnosis
- Supportive measures as required
- Pharmacologic intervention as necessary based on etiology (e.g. abx, tylenol, chemo)
- If infection or malignancy consider various imaging modalities and tests (e.g., PPD, CT scan, TEE/TTE, LP, bone marrow bx, etc
