Respiratory Flashcards
What is Isoniazid?
First line of TB to treat latent TB infection
What do you teach people taking Isoniazid meds?
Avoid alcohol Take Vit B6 Avoid aluminum antacids Report changes in vision Report signs/symptoms of severe adverse effects: Hepatoxicity peripheral neuropathy
What is a complication of peritonsillar, and what are the signs and symptoms
trismus
pooling of saliva
deviation of uvula which can all cause airway obstruction
What med is nasal polyps sensitive to?
NSAIDS - can exacerbate asthma
Signs and symptoms of resp failure?
PaCO2 > 45 mmhg PaO2 <60 Paradoxical breathing Mental status change Absence wheezing Single word Dyspnea
What medication is contraindicated for patients who are COPD
Morphine, benzodiazepine = restlessness = hypoxia
What meds are used for COPD pts?
Albuterol it is a beta agonist for bronchoconstriction because of rapid short action.
Why is a corticosteriod utilized for in COPD?
Decrease inflammation of the lungs.
What medication should be administered from someone with a low respiratory rate, decrease peak flow
Albuterol
What are side effects of albuterol?
tremor, tachycardia, palpitations, restlessness, hypokalemia
What is COPD?
A combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis
What are the risk factors for COPD
Tobacco smoking, respiratory irritants, clients occupation
What is asthma?
Chronic inflammation caused by hyperreactive airway resulting in edema, hypersecretion of mucus and bronchospasm.
What is a medical emergency for asthma?
absent breath sounds
use of accessory muscles chest tightness cough high pitched wheeze on both expiration and inspiration tachypnea
What are the three factors you need to teach parents to be prepared for a patient with CF?
Aerobic exercise
chest physiotherapy
financial needs
How often is a pnuemmonia vaccine recomended?
individuals greater than 65, recommended after 5 years
What is acetylcystine?
it is a nebulizer to help loosen respiratory secretions, but it can worsen bronchospasm
what is the priority after a new trach is placed into a pt?
ensuring the tube placement is secure by checking the tightness. 1 finger.
What is bronchoscopy?
A procedure to visualize bronchi passing through the nose
When a pt is hypercapnic what should you administer?
BIPAP - because they are hypercapneic meaning resp failure.
What IV Fluid can be administered AFTER assisting to commode for PPH?
Oxytocin to control bleeding if fundus remains distended.
For a pt with a severe asthma attack what meds can be administered?
Oxygen
Albuterol
Ipratropium
Systemic corticosteriods
When a pt has an submersion injury what is required?
Even if they’ve been submerged for a short period observe for 6 hrs.
Any decrease in resp could mean increased work of breathing = respiratory failure.
When a person is palliative and dying what meds can you provide to someone with a death rattle?
Atropine or scopolamine.
What is a complication that can develop in acute pancreatitis?
ARDS - crackles indicate this.
