Respiratory Flashcards
1
Q
Type 1 respiratory failure?
A
Low PaO2 and normal PaCO2
2
Q
Type 2 respiratory failure?
A
- Low PaO2
- High PaCO2
3
Q
Causes of type 2 respiratory failure?
A
- Increased airway resistance (COPD, asthma)
- Reduced breathing effort (opiates, extreme obesity)
4
Q
Causes of respiratory alkalosis?
A
- PE
- Panic attack
- Pneumothorax
- Pain increasing RR
5
Q
Name some obstructive airway disorders?
A
- COPD
- Asthma
- Emphysema
- Cystic fibrosis
6
Q
Name some restrictive airway disorders?
A
Fibrotic lung disease
7
Q
What is FEV1?
A
- Forced expiratory volume in 1s
8
Q
What is FVC?
A
Volume of air that the patient can forcibly exhale in one breath
9
Q
Describe an obstructive spirometry pattern?
A
- FEV1 reduced (<80% predicted)
- FVC reduced, but to a lesser extent
- FEV1/FVC ratio (<0.7)
10
Q
Describe reversibility testing?
A
- Administer salbutamiol
- Repeat spirometry
- Reversibility indicates asthma
- No reversibility indicates COPD
- Partial reversibility may indicate mixed airway disease
11
Q
Describe the restrictive spiromatry pattern?
A
- FEV1 reduced (<80% normal)
- FVC reduced (<80% normal)
- FEV1/FVC ratio (>0.7)
12
Q
Name some causes of restrictive lung disease?
A
- Obesity/pregnancy
- Lobectomy/pneumonectomy
- Pulmonary fibrosis or oedema
