Respiratory Flashcards
1
Q
Pulmonary Ventilation
A
- Exchange of air between atmosphere and the alveoli.
- Inhalation and exhalation.
2
Q
External Gas Exchange
A
Occurs in the lungs as O2 diffuses from the alveoli into the blood and CO2 diffuses out of the blood.
3
Q
Gas Transport in the Blood
A
Circulating blood carries gases between lungs and tissues, supplying O2 to the cells and bringing back CO2.
4
Q
Internal Gas Exchange
A
Occurs in the tissues as O2 diffuses from blood to the cells; CO2 travels from the cells into the blood.
5
Q
Structure of Respiratory System
A
- Nasal Cavity
- Pharynx (Throat)
- Larynx (Voice Box)
- Trachea (Windpipe)
- Bronchus
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
*Alveoli - Lungs
6
Q
Lungs
A
- Right lung has 3 lobes; Left lung has 2 lobes.
- Left lung has indentation on medial side for accomidating heart.
7
Q
Pleura
A
- Continuous, double sac covering each lung.
- A serous membrane composed of an epithelial layer overlying areolar tissue.
- Portion attached to chest wall is the Parietal Pleura.
- Portion attached to lung surface is Visceral Pleura.
- Between two layers is pleural space containing a thin film of fluid that lubricates membranes.
