post op the patient with need careful monitoring and assessment
airway and breathing
pain
potential bleeding and wound drainage system
maintain airway: frequent assessment, place in fowlers positon, encourage coughing and deep breathing, if patient has a trach provide trach care

A

early: persistene hoarseness for two week, cough or sore throught that doesnt go away, lump in the back of the neck
later: dysphagia, dyspnea, unilateral nasal obstruction or discharge, hoarseness, mouth ulcers, bad breath, cervical lymphadenopathy, pain in the ear if metastasized

chest tube maintence

A

note the amount of drainage color consistency often
check the amount of drainage once a shift
check the tubing and the patient every 4 hours
keep tubing level or below the patient
never clamp the tubing
cough frequently and deep breathe
check the dressing and change as needed
encourage moving to prevent atelectasis
pain medications
