xanthine- long acting bronchodilator
breaks down phosphodiesterase which in turn stops the breakdown of cyclicAMP
this leads to bronchodilation
when is theophylline indicated
as an add on if salbutamol and beclometasone inhalers aren’t enough
also should consider montelukast, salmeterol etc
when is theophylline contraindicated
