Respiration and Lung Auscultation Flashcards
What is the respiratory system?
The body system that brings oxygen from the air into the body for delivery via the blood to cells
What is the upper respiratory tract?
The portion of the respiratory system from the trachea outwards
What is the lower respiratory tract?
The portion of the respiratory tract from the trachea inwards
What is the diaphragm?
The muscular partition between the abdomen and thorax which contracts to make a vacuum in the thorax to draw air into the lungs
What is respiration?
Diffusion of gasses between the atmosphere and body cells
What are the prefixes pertaining to the lungs?
-Pneum/o
-Pneumon/o
-Puml/o
-Pulmon/o
What is a lobe?
A well-defined segment of the lungs
What is ventilation?
Breathing
What is spontaneous ventilation?
Animal breathes on its own
What is mechanical ventilation?
Animal is given assistance to breathe
What is inhalation/inspiration?
Drawing in a breath
What is exhalation/expiration?
Release of a breath
What is expansion?
The increase in space occupied by the lungs upon inspiration
What should be looked for to detect an upper respiratory infection?
-Sneezing
-Nasal or ocular discharge
-Coughing
-Corneal ulcers and conjunctivitis in cats
What is conjunctivitis?
Pink eye
What can tracheal manipulation do?
Elicit a cough in dogs with kennel cough
What can tracheal auscultation do?
Listen to fluid in the trachea
How is a respiratory rate calculated?
The same way as HR
What should not be counted when calculating respiratory rate?
Pants
How is a respiratory rate written in a record?
RR=_
What is the normal respiratory rate in dogs?
12-24/min when not panting or sniffing
What is the normal respiratory rate in cats?
12-24/min
What are the 4 abnormal respiratory noises?
Crackles, rhonchi, wheezing, stridor
What is crackling?
Crackling or popping noises due to secretions in the airway
What is rhonchi?
Coarse rattling due to secretions in the airway
What is wheezing?
High-pitched whistling heard during inspiration when the airway is impaired
What is stridor?
Snoring, squeaking, or whistling heard on inspiration and expiration that suggests the narrowing of the airway
What is consolidation?
When lung tissue becomes firm and solid or engorged with fluid
What can cause difficulty hearing air movement?
Consolidation or air/fluid outside the lungs
