respiration Flashcards
ATP
Stores and transfers energy in cells. Created through respiration in the mitochondria. Obtained through the breakdown of food and made up of three phosphate attached to adenosine (amino acid).
How does ATP release energy?
Through respiration ATP is hydrolysed to ADP by breaking a bond between one phosphate. This results in two phosphates attached to adenosine. This releases energy.
Aerobic respiration
With sufficient supply of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration
Without oxygen
Aerobic respiration equation
Glucose + Oxygen – Carbon dioxide + Water +ATP
C6H12O6 + 6O2 – 6CO2 + 6H2O (+ATP)
Anaerobic respiration
Glucose – Latic acid + ATP (less)
Why is ATP efficient?
Releases energy in small manageable amounts.
Broken down in one simple step (one bond broken).
Immediate energy available.
Can be easily made again.
