Respiration Flashcards
Respiration
a chemical reaction which happens in every cell in the body to produce energy from nutrient molecules
What is the energy from respiration used for?
Muscle contraction Protein synthesis Cell division active transport Keeping body temp. constant
Aerobic respiration
The chemical reactions in cells that use oxygen to break down nutrient molecules to release energy
Aerobic respiration equation
Glucose + oxygen –> Carbon Dioxide + water
Anaerobic respiration
The chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules to release energy without using oxygen.
Anaerobic respiration equation
In humans - glucose –> lactic acid In yeast and plants - glucose –> alchohol + carbon dioxide
Anaerobic respiration balanced equation
C6H12O6 –> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
What is oxygen debt?
- Caused by anaerobic respiration
- To repay this, lactic acid must be transported to th liver where it is broken down into CO2 and H2O by oxygen
- This is why after excercise, frequent and deep breaths take place to remove the oxygen dept
