Respiration Flashcards
Chemical formula for respiration.
Glucose + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water
What is respiration
It is an exothermic reaction which gives out energy to the surroundings.
Where does it take place
Takes place in the mitochondria
What is Anaerobic Respiration?
Anaerobic Respiration is a chemical reaction that releases glucose without using oxygen.
Glucose>lactic acid.
The body prefers aerobic respiration.
Why does Anaerobic Respiration happen?
Anaerobic respiration happens when oxygen cannot be delivered to the muscles fast enough (eg hard exercise)
What are the effects of Anaerobic Respiration?
It causes Muscle Fatigue and Pain
It also causes a ‘Oxygen Debt’ because oxygen must be used to get rid of the Lactic Acid
How is Anaerobic Respiration in yeast different to Animals
When Yeast Cells respire they produce Ethanol and Carbon Dioxide.
Respiration in yeast cells provides us with Ethanol for alcoholic drinks and carbon dioxide which makes bread rise.
