Chapter 4 Pholem And Xylem Cells Flashcards
1 Transpiration
The transpiration stream is the movement of water upwards xylem cells
- Transpiration
Is the evaporating on the leaves.
- Translocation
Is the movement of sugary sap up and down the stem
Phloem vessels-they are on the outside
Phloem carries sugary sap up and down. This process is called translocation.
There are xylem vessels
They are towards they middle
Xylem carries water and minerals upwards- this is called the transpiration
Dissection of a celery
Vessels are evenly distributed
Water contained inside long continuos tubes.
Function of the upper epidermis
One cell thick and covers it like a leaf.
Also contains a waxy layer on the top.
Function of the Palisade mesophyll layer
Cylindrical shape this helps the light penetrate into the leaf
Function of the Spongy mesophyll layer
Consists of irregular shaped cells with large air spaces between them.
Function of the Lower epidermis
It contains pores called stomata
Function of the guard cells
Changes conditions, light intensity
Function of the leaf vein
Water and salts enter the leaf via the xylem
