Respiration Flashcards
Abdominal type of respiration
When the descent of the diaphragm is relied on to increase the capacity of inspiration
Abdominal Respiration is accompanied by a marked _____ and _____ excursion of the _______ abdominal wall
Inward and outward excursion
Anterior
This type of respiration is seen in infants up to the age of about 2 years
Abdominal resp
Thoracic type of respiration
Movement of the ribs is mainly used to increase the capacity of inspiration
Females use this type of respiration
Thoracic resp
Males use a combination of these two breathing techniques
Abdominal and thoracic
In the sequence of a normal breath, what comes first?
First: easy onset, subtle rise of the abdomen
In the sequence of a normal breath, what comes second?
Lateral costal expansion
In the sequence of a normal breath, what comes third?
Gentle rise of the upper chest primarily in the superior and anterior planes
What is the rate of respiration? Is it faster is children or adults?
16-20
Faster in kids
Pattern of normal quiet breathing:
Diaphragm descends with abdominal protrusion
When it hits abdominal contents, costal fibers of diaphragm/external intercostals and parasternal internal intercostals contract to move ribs out laterally in a bucket-handle fashion
Then, both intercostals work to move upper ribs in an upper and forward direction (pump-handle)
When the ribs move out laterally, what is the term for this movement?
Bucket handle
When the ribs move in an upward and forward direction, what kind of movement is this?
Pump handle
