Respiration Flashcards
what is respiration?
Respiration is the process of releasing energy from glucose, which goes on in every cell
what is the equation of aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen —–> Carbon dioxide + water +energy
what is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose —–> energy + lactic acid
what is the energy from respiration used for in BOTH animals and plants?
To build up larger molecules from smaller ones (proteins and amino acids)
what do animals use energy from respiration for?
For muscle contraction and to keep body temperature the same
what do plants use energy from respiration for?
To build up sugars, nitrates and nutrients to make amino acids then protiens
why does exercise increase the heart rate
Exercise increases the heart rate as you need to pump more blood with oxygen around to the muscles so that aerobic respiration can take place or to repay the oxygen ‘debt’ left by anaerobic respiration
what is glycogen?
Glycogen is converted glucose stored in the muscles for extra energy during vigorous exercise
