Distribution of organisms Flashcards
1
Q
name the five ways that distribution occurs
A
Temperature, water, oxygen and carbon dioxide, nutrients and light
2
Q
what is a habitat?
A
A place where organisms live
3
Q
how do you use a quadrat?
A
- Place a 1m quadrat on the ground at a random point with the first sample area
- Count all the organism within the quadrat
- Repeat step 1-2 as many times as possible and work out a mean (total # of organisms divided by the number of quadrats)
- Repeat this in a second sample area
- compare the two means
4
Q
how do you work out the population size?
A
Mean number of organisms per m2 multiplied by total area of habitat
5
Q
how do you use transects?
A
- Mark out a line in the area you want to study using a tape measure
- Collect data along the line by counting the organisms along the line or using quadrats across the line
6
Q
how do you make the experiment reliable?
A
- Take a larger sample size
2. Use random samples
