Mitosis and Meiosis Flashcards
1
Q
what is mitosis?
A
Mitosis is when a cell reproduces itself by splitting to form two identical offspring to grow or replace damaged cells
2
Q
how does mitosis occur?
A
- The cell gets signal to divide It needs to duplicate its DNA- so that there’s a copy for each cell
- The chromosomes then line up at the centre of the cell and the cell fibres pull them apart, the two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
- Membranes from around each of the sets of chromosomes which become the nuclei of the cells
- Lastly the cytoplasm divides giving you two identical cells
3
Q
what type of reproduction uses mitosis?
A
Asexual reproduction
4
Q
what is meiosis?
A
Meiosis is the division of gametes and produces cells that have half the normal number of chromosomes
5
Q
how does meiosis occur?
A
- It gets a signal telling it to duplicate and divide
- In the first division the chromosomes pairs line up in the centre of the cell
- The pairs are then pulled apart ,so that each new cell only has one copy of each chromosome some of the mothers and some of the fathers go into each new cell
- In the second division the chromosomes line up again in the centre of the cell, and the arms of the chromosomes are pulled apart and you get four gametes with only a single set of chromosomes in it
