respiration Flashcards
respiration releases energy from food. what is it called?
ATP
respiration releases energy from food. what is it calleD?
ATP
what is ATP used for?
to provide energy for many different processes in the body
what type of respiration uses oxygen?
Aerobic
what is the equation for Aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 –> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O
glucose + 6 oxygen –> 6 carbon dioxide + 6 water
what type of respiration doesn’t use oxygen?
Anaerobic
when do we use Anaerobic respiration and why?
during exercise as despite the blood pressure and BpM and breathing rate increasing there still isn’t enough oxygen getting to the muscles.
What happens when a cell doesn’t have enough oxygen?
the mitochondria creates lactic acid as a byproduct of the breakdown of glucose into energy.
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose –> lactic acid (+ Energy)
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose –> lactic acid (+ Energy)
what are the two main disadvantages of anaerobic respiration over aerobic
lactic acid causes pain and fatigue in the muscles
anaerobic produces much less energy per glucose molecule
what is an oxygen debt?
the buildup of lactic acid caused by anaerobic respiration
how do we ‘pay off’ and oxygen debt?
during recovery period the heart rate and breathing rate stay high enough that rapid blood flow can take the lactic acid away from the muscles and replace it with oxygen. the rapid breathing rate means that there is enough oxygen to replace the lactic acid and for the liver to break it down.
