Adaptations Flashcards
What physical adaptations do some animals have to live in cold conditions
They have insulation (fir that traps air that’s then heated by the body but also keeps the body warm, or fat under the skin)
Large animals with small. Ears to reduce volume/ size ratio
What behavioural adaptations do animals in the cold have?
Migration to warmer areas
Penguins have a counter current head exchange mechanism this means that warm blood going one way heats up the cold blood going in the other direction
Other organisms have biochemical adaptations such as antifreeze proteins in their cells
How do animals in hot places keep cool
By increasing heat loss
What are some of the physical adaptations of animals in hot conditions?
Little hair to trap air
Large ears and small body to giving them a larger surface area to volume ratio meaning it can lose heat easily
What behavioural adaptations do animals in the heat have to keep cool
They pant to loose heat through breath
They lick their fur as the liquid wants to evaporate taking the heat energy with it.
They also lie in shade during the hottest times of the day
What are the three types of adaptations?
Behavioural (how much they behave)
Anatomical (how the body is adapted)
Physiological adaptations (inside like proteins)
What do you call organisms that live in normally uninhabitable conditions
Extremophiles
What is a specialist adapted organism?
An organism that I adapted to one specific habit t
What is a generalist adapted organism?
An organism that is adapted to live in several habitats
In a habitat would a generalist or a specialist be defeated in regards to competition over resources?
The generalist would be defeated if the specialist is in its own habitat as one is better adapted
How have some animals adapted to live in very cold conditions?
By adapting to reduce heat loss
