Respiration Flashcards
What are adaptogens?
increase the ability of the body to cope with stress and prevent infection
What are immunostimulants?
stimulate the immune system to increase the body’s ability to combat infection
What are antimicrobials?
they destroy or inhibit growth of microorganisms
What are antivirals?
they inhibit growth of viruses
What are anti adherance?
prevents adherence of bacteria or viruses to the mucous membranes
What are febrifuge?
reduce fever, also good for infections causing fevers, similar to tylenol/aspirin
What are diaphoretics?
stimulate perspiration and reduce fever (doesn’t exist in the drug world)
What are antitussives?
relieve coughing - can use demulcents, expectorants, cough suppressants
What are cough suppressants?
Antitussives that inhibit the cough reflex (use with caution on wet coughs)
What are demulcents?
increases production of mucous in respiratory tract = moistening and protection of lungs and reducing cough
What are expectorants?
facilitates expulsion of phlegm from lungs
What are antispasmodics?
relieves the spasms of smooth muscle
What are bronchodilators?
opens bronchioles to make it easier to breathe
What are decongestants?
relieves nasal congestion (nasal catarrh), stimulates sympathetic, antihistamine
What are antiallergic?
decreases symptoms associated with allergies (runny nose, itchy eyes)
What is the action of garlic?
antimicrobial
What are indications for garlic?
bacterial infections, fungal infections, viral infections, parasitic infections
What is the action and herbs used for ear infections?
antimicrobial, vulnary, anodyne – ear oil, allium, verbascum, calenula, hypericum
What are actions of Nettle (Urtica Spp)?
Antiallergic (antihistamine), astringent, antiinflammatory
What are indications for nettle?
seasonal allergies
What are actions of Eyebright (Eypharasia Officinalis)
astringent, antiallergic, anticatarrhal, antiinflammatory
What are indications for Eyebright?
reduces catarrh of the eyes, nose and ears - conjuctivitis, rhinitis - topical application
What are indications for antiallergic and herbs?
sinusitis, rhinitis - eyebright, nettle
what are indications for decongestants?
upper respiratory tract infections, sinusitis, rhinitis, allergies
what are herbs that are decongestants?
ma Huang, blue gum, cayenne
what are allergies?
immune response to a foreign substance typically causing a runny nose, itchy eyes, fatigue
what are actions and herbs for allergies?
antiallergic, antihistamine – herbs: eyebright, nettle, rosemary, astragalus
What are actions of Jimson Weed (Datura Stramonium)?
anticholinergic, antispasmodic, bronchodilator
What are indications for Jimson Weed?
acute asthma (smoked) ** caution: narrow therapeutic indiex - tachycardia, insomnia, decreased appetite, dry mouth, tremors and hallucinations
What are the actions of Ephedra (Ephedra Sinica)?
bronchodilator, sympathomimetic, diaphoretic, decongestant, antispasmodic
What are indications for ephedra?
constricted breathing, bronchitis, acute asthma, nasal congestion associated with infection/allergies, sinusitis
what are indications for bronchodilators?
asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia
What are herbs for bronchodilation?
ephedra, jimson weed, coffee
What are actions to help asthma?
bronchodilators, expectorants, antiinflammatories * also bronchial astham - period asthma like attacks of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness
What are the actions of Red Clover?
antispasmodic, expectorant, antitussive, alterative
What are indications of red clover?
spasmodic cough, pertussis (whooping cough), bronchitis, pneumonia
What are the actions of Thyme (Thymus Vulgaris)?
antitussive, antispasmodic, expectorant, antimicrobial
What are indications for Thyme?
infections associated with copius mucous, bronchial constriction and spasmodic coughing - bronchitis, pneumonia, croup, pertussis
