RESPIRATION 3: Gas Exchange Flashcards
What is partial pressure?
The pressure exerted by an individual gas in a mixture.
Where does external respiration occur?
Between alveoli and pulmonary capillaries.
Where does internal respiration occur?
Between systemic capillaries and body tissues.
Why does oxygen diffuse into the blood at the alveoli?
Because its partial pressure is higher in alveoli than in capillary blood.
What drives diffusion of gases?
Partial pressure gradients.
What factors affect gas exchange?
Surface area, membrane thickness, pressure gradients, and gas solubility.
What is the effect of pulmonary fibrosis on gas exchange?
Thickened membranes reduce diffusion efficiency.
What is the typical partial pressure of oxygen in atmospheric air?
~160 mmHg
