Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
What is cellular respiration?
A
An exothermic reaction which is continuously occurring in living cells
2
Q
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
A
Fermentation
3
Q
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells?
A
Glucose -> ethanol + CO2
4
Q
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in human?
A
Glucose -> lactic acid
5
Q
What is respiration used for in the human body?
A
- movement
- keeping warm
- chemical reactions to build larger molecules
- protein synthesis
- active transport
- cell division + growth
6
Q
When does anaerobic respiration occur?
A
- when there isn’t enough oxygen
7
Q
What does a build up of lactic acid cause?
A
- muscle failure
- less efficient muscle contractions
8
Q
How does lactic acid get out of the muscles and how is it disposed of?
A
- blood flows through muscle tissue and transport lactic acid to liver
- liver converts lactic acid back into glucose
9
Q
When does anerobic respiration occur?
A
- an absence of oxygen
- during vigorous exercise
10
Q
Where does aerobic respiration take place?
A
Mitochondria
