Digestive System Flashcards
Where is bile produced and where is it stored?
Produced in liver
Stored in gall bladder
How are the products of digestion used by the body?
Glucose used for :
- respiration
- stored as glycogen in the liver
-simple sugars used to build new carbohydrates
- amino acids are sued to build new proteins
- fatty acids and glycerol are stored as fat
- glycerol can be converted to glucose for energy
What is stomach acid made of?
Hydrochloric acid
What is the function of the digestive system?
- the organs of the digestive system work together to digest food
- food broken down into small soluble molecules
- small molecules can be absorbed into the bloodstream
What is the function of bile?
- neutralises stomach acid as it is an alkaline
- emulsifies fats to small droplets which increases its surface area
What is the purpose of the large intestine?
To remove excess water
What does proteis break proteins down into?
Amino acids
What does the villi absorb the nutrients into?
The blood
What does the salivary glands produce?
Amylase
What is the purpose of the small intestines?
Produces proeise, amylase, lipase
Digested food is absorbed
