Hormones Flashcards
What is LH and what does it stimulate? And how do other hormones interact with it?
Luitinising hormone stimulates ovulation and is triggered by high oestrogen levels and is stopped by progesterone
What is FSH, what hormones interact with it?
- FSH stimulates oestrogen,
- when oestrogen gets too high, it inhibits FSH production
- Progesterone inhibits progesterone production
How do other hormones interact with oestrogen?
- stimulated by FSH
- inhibits FSH when oestrogen levels are too high
- when oestrogen levels are too high, stimulates LH production
How does progesterone interact with other hormones?
- progesterone inhibits FSH and LH production
What are the differences between the endocrine system and the nervous system?
- travel through blood rather than electrical impulses
- endocrine system spreads more slowly which means it’s effects last longer
- hormones act more generally rather than nervous system where nerves are sent to one specific area.
What is the definition of a hormone?
Small chemical molecules that are passed into the blood and spread around the body through the bloodstream
What is the endocrine system and what is it made up of?
The hormones system
- made up of glands that secrete hormones
What hormone does the pancreas release and what is its purpose?
- releases insulin
- regulates blood glucose concentration
What is the purpose of the thyroid gland and where is it in the body?
- produces and releases thyroxine which regulates the rate of metabolism and effects growth and development
- in the neck in the shape of a bow tie
What is the purpose of the adrenal gland and what are its effect?
- releases Adrenalin
- triggers ‘fight or flight’ which increases heart rate
