Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
It is a chemical reaction to release energy from glucose
Features of anaerobic respiration:
Doesn’t use oxygen
Releases less energy but faster
Features of aerobic respiration:
More frequently used
Requires oxygen
Humans are able to switch if not lacking oxygen
What is the scientific term for breathing?
Ventilation
Where does respiration occur?
In the mitochondria (in both plant and animal cells)
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
What is released which causes pain and cramps when anareobically respirating?
Lactic acid
What is fermentation?
Fermentation is the process that bacteria and fungi do to respirate
What is the equation for fermentation?
Glucose —>ethanol + carbon dioxide
How does glucose get transported around the body?
- When broken down, energy is released
- After the energy is transferred into ATP
- The ATP transfers the energy around the body
What does respiration release?
Energy in the form of ATP
What is the equation for cellular respiration
C6H12O6 +6 O2 ——>6 CO2+ 6 H2O
What is the word equation for cellular respiration
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + Chemical Energy
What are the products of aerobic respiration
ATP (for processes that require energy), carbon dioxide, water
