Food test for Starch
Originally clear
- Add a few drops of starch solution
- Add several drops of iodine
If Starch is present the solution turns blue black
Food test for Sugar
Originally blue
- Add 2cm (cubed) of glucose solution
- Add 2cm (cubed) of Benedict’s solution
- Place in boiling water and leave for approximately 5 mins
If present turns orange or red
Food test for protein
Originally clear
1. Add 2cm (cubed) of protein solution)
2. Add 2cm (cubed) of sodium hydroxide solution
3. Add a couple of drops of copper sulphate solution, and shake
This should make the solution blue
If present turns violet
Food test for Lipid/fats
Originally a little bit yellow
- Add 2cm (cubed) oil
- Add 2cm (cubed) ethanol and shake
If present becomes cloudy
