Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration
The breakdown of glucose to release energy
What are the types of respiration
Aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration
What is aerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is the complete breakdown of glucose to release a relatively large amount of energy. It requires oxygen and produces CO2 and H2O
What is anaerobic respiration
The incomplete breakdown of glucose to release a relatively small amount of energy. It does not use oxygen and its products depends on the organism
In humans, the product is lactic acid
In yeast, the products are ethanol + carbon dioxide
What can the energy from respiration be used for in humans
- Muscle contractions
- Cell division
- Active transport
- Protein synthesis
- Growth
- Maintaining constant internal body temperatures
What is the balanced equation of aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 –> 6O2 + 6H2O
