Characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
What are the characteristics of living organisms
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Control
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
What are the types of organisms
Animals
Plants
Fungi
Protoctists
Prokaryotic organisms (e.g. bacteria)
What is the cell wall of fungi made of
Chitin
Explain the structure of a multicellular fungi organism
Made up of thread-like structures called hyphae which contain a lot of nuclei. The network of hyphae is called mycelium
How do fungi digest food
Extracellular digestion. They release digestive enzymes outside the mycelium and absorb the digested molecules
What are prokaryotic organisms
- Single-celled
- Do not have a nucleus
- Contain nucleic material in cytoplasm
Explain the structure of a bacterial cell
- Prokaryotic
- No nucleus but contain circular chromosomes of DNA
- Contain plasmids - small, circular loops of DNA containing genes
- They have a cell wall (not cellulose)
What is a pathogen
A microorganism which causes diseases in another organism
What are the types of pathogens
Bacteria
Viruses
Fungi
Protoctists
What is the structure of a virus cell
Envelope on the outside
Protein coat surrounding DNA or RNA
