Respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration
It is the process where energy is realised from food
What is the equation for respiration
Glucose + oxygen turns into carbon dioxide + water + energy
In animals how do we get glucose how does oxygen travel how does carbon dioxide get removed and what happens to water
Glucose comes from the food we eat
Oxygen comes from the air in our lungs and is carried in the blood by the circulatory system
Co2 is removed by blood through the circulatory system and exhaled by the lungs
Water is moved by kidneys which are part of our excretory system and also exhaled by our lungs
What happens to glucose oxygen co2 in plant cells
Glucose is made in photosynthesis oxygen comes from the stomata co2 is used in photosynthesis
What does atp stand for
Adenosine triphosphate
What does atp do
Provide the energy that cell needs it stores a small amount of energy
Why do you use your fingers to detect a pulse in your neck
Because your thumb has a heart beat as well
What is the eqauation for anaerobic respiration in mammals
Glucose turns into lactic acid and energy
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plants
Glucose turns into alcohol and co2 and energy
What do both aerobic and anaerobic respiration have in common
Both require glucose
Happens in cells
Produce energy
What happens in just aerobic respiration
Produces carbon dioxide
Requires oxygen
What happens in just anaerobic respiration
Produces lactic acid
happens for short periods
Creates oxygen debt
What would you do to prove the products of aerobic respiration
Put peas in bicarbonate indicator
Why do miscle cells need many mitochondria
Because they need to carry out a lot of respiration because the muscles need oxygen
Why do fitter people breakdown lactic acid quicker
The body can go back into aerobic respiration they pump more oxygen because of the heart so less lactic acid
