Resources in Ecosystems Flashcards
Biosphere
The parts of the earth and surrounding atmosphere where life exists.
Biotic Potential
The potential growth of a population if it could grow in perfect conditions with no limiting factors.
Carrying capacity
The largest number of individuals of one species that an ecosystem can support over time.
Community
All the populations living in an ecosystem at the same time.
Eco system
All the living and nonliving things in a given area.
Limiting factor
A factor that can limit the growth of the population.
Overpopulation
A condition that occurs when a population becomes so large that it causes damage to the environment.
Population
All the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time.
Species
A group of organisms that have similar traits, are able to reproduce, and their offspring is fertile.
What are examples of limiting factors
Space, food, water, mates, sunlight, temperature
Extinction
This is when there are no more living individuals of a species.
Endangered species
This is when a species is at risk of extinction. If the population of the species continues to decline, it is then categorized as critically endangered.
Threatened species
This is when the population of a species begins to decline. This means that the species is at risk but not yet endangered.
