Flow Of Energy Flashcards
Producers
An organism that uses an outside energy source, such as the sun, and produces its own food.
Consumers
An organism that cannot make its own food and gets energy by eating other organisms.
Detritivores
An organism that consumes the bodies of dead organisms and wastes produced by living organisms.
Food Chain
A model that shows how energy flows in an ecosystem through feeding relationships.
Food Web
A model of energy transfer that can show how the food chains in a community are interconnected.
Herbivore
An organism that only consumes plants.
Omnivore
An organism that consumes both plants and animals.
Carnivore
An organism that consumes only animals.
Energy Pyramid
A model that shows the amount of energy available in each link of a food chain.
How do food chains/webs work
All food chains and food webs begin with a producer.
Producers harness the energy from the sun to carry out photosynthesis and produce their own food. They are typically plants.
The next organism in a food chain is a primary consumer. Primary consumers are either herbivores or omnivores.
Next are the secondary consumers which are omnivores or carnivores.
Tertiary consumers are typically apex predators and mostly carnivores.
How much energy is transferred on the energy pyramid
In an energy pyramid, there is approximately 10% of the energy from the previous level available. This is because the organisms use the rest of their energy to carry out their living processes such as cellular respiration, reproduction, growth etc.
How is compost created?
Detritivores help create the compost by enabling the organic material to decompose and break down.
What are some things you can compost
Fruit and vegetable scraps (or expired fruits and vegetables), eggshells, paper napkins, and coffee grounds
What are some things you can NOT compost
Coffee cups, meats and bones, pastas and grains, food cooked in oil, dairy, recyclables, non-biodegradable waste, and bio-plastics
What is 1 example of a producer
A tree. It absorbs its energy from the sun
