Levels Of organization Flashcards
Cell differentiation
The process by which cells become different types of more specialized cells.
Tissues
A group of similar types of cells that work together to carry out specific tasks.
Organs
A group of different tissues working together to perform a particular job
Organ Systems
A group of organs that work together to perform a specific task
Vascular tissue
Specialized plant tissue composed of tubelike cells that transports water and nutrients in some plants.
What are Specialized cells
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in the body. However as the organism increases in size the need for specialized cells increases. Through a process called cell differentiation, cells can become specialized for specific functions; such as a nerve cell, a muscle cell, a red blood cell etc.
What are Tissues
When the organism gets big enough, similar cells are grouped together to create tissues that work together to carry out specific tasks. Each different type of tissue has specific functions. There are 4 types of tissues in animals: muscular, nervous, epithelial and connective. There are 3 types of tissues in plants: dermal, vascular and ground.
What are Organs
Different tissues can also work together to carry out even more functions. These are called organs; they consist of more than one type of tissue working together to perform a particular job. Each type of tissue within the organ will carry out a specific function that is necessary for the organ to complete its function. A great example of this is the stomach. The stomach contains all 4 types of animal tissue, each tissue performs a specific job to help the stomach to work properly.
What are Organ systems
Typically organs do not function alone and are part of a larger organ system. An organ system consists of multiple organs that work together to complete a series of tasks. For example the human digestive system is made up of the stomach, liver, small intestine, and large intestine. These organs work together to break down food in order to absorb nutrients, and take them into the body.
What are the organ systems called
In the human body, there are a number of organ systems:
The respiratory system
The nervous system
The digestive system
The circulatory system
The muscular system
The skeletal system
What does the levels of organization flow chart kind of look like
Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, organs form organ systems, organ systems form organisms
