Resin Composites Presentations Flashcards

1
Q

What are the methods to overcome stress in bulk fills?

A
  1. Include the polymerisation modulator
  2. Includes 2 monomers one which is a high molecular weight aromatic dimethacrylate (AUDMA) which decreases number of reactive groups in resin (groups which shrink)

Q

What works in combination with AUDMA to decrease shrinkage?

A

A class of compounds called addition-fragmentation monomers (AFM) works in combination with AUDMA to decrease the shrinkage stress

Q

How does AUDMA (methacrylates) decrease stress?

A

React into developing polymer by forming cross links between adjacent polymer chains.

When stressed during polymerisation these molecules may break or fragment so providing a means for relaxation of the developing polymer network and so stress is relieved

What are 3 strategies to allow light penetration?

A

Lower filler content and increased filler particle size

Modify resin to increase its translucency

Q

Why can bulk filled restorative material be used for the entire restoration (compared to previous)?

A

Increased viscosity, increased filler, good loading, good wearing

16
Q

What are the advantages of using a matrix band with layering resin based composite?

A

Minimal finishing required, usually just polish

17
Q

What can excessive cutting back and finishing lead to?

A

White line fracture around restoration

18
Q

What are causes of long term failure?

A

Recurrent caries

Poor technique = leakage

Tooth flexure

19
Q

To repair a resin composite do you need to remove the entire filling every time?

A

No
