Resin Composite Presentations Flashcards
What are the 3 groups of resin composites?
Universal
Flowable
Packable
What is a universal resin composite?
Can be used for all applications but there may be some compromise in specific uses
What is flowable resin composite?
More fluid composites used especially for the conservative restoration of teeth
What is packable resin composite?
More viscous materials generally only used in posterior situations
What resin composite is used in posterior situations?
Packable resin composite
What is the problem with Packable resin composite?
Don’t come in many shades
Do stiffer materials have higher or lower loading?
Higher filler loading
When would you not use a universal resin composite?
Specialist practice - require better aesthetic
S
When would you use universal resin on anterior teeth?
Class III class IV when aesthetics are not paramount
When would you use universal resin composite on a class V?
Restore cations lesions where retention is by an undercut
When would you not use universal resin composite?
Where aesthetics are critical
When’re good moisture controls cannot be achieved
Where inadequate enamel is available for etching
What resin composite can be used for splinting?
Universal
Mix with fibres
What is the universal resin composite used in the IOD at the moment?
Filtek supreme XTE universal
Type of composite: nanofilled
Are flowable composites highly or low viscous?
Low viscosity
What is the filler loading like of flowable composite?
Lower filler loading
Some products have compensated by increased filler particle size
Compare universal and flowable composite?
Flowable composites are:
Not as strong in comparison
Are not as wear resistant
Exhibit greater polymerisation shrinkage upon curing
Lower modulus of elasticity so increased ability to flex during function and better to withstand flexural forces
Do flowable composites act more like the filler or the resin?
They behave more like the resin
When would you use flowable resin based composite on a class I?
Small class I cavities
Involving enamel or only a small amount of dentine in permanent or deciduous dentition
When would you use flowable resin based composite on a class V cavity?
Especially when caused by non-carious tooth surface loss (NCTSL)
What cavity classifications would you use flowable resin composite?
Class I
Class V
A restoration with deficient ditched amalgam margins, what resin would you use to repair it?
Flowable resin
When else would you use flowable resin composite?
As a lining material especially when Packable composure is to be used to restore the cavity
Blocking out of undercuts in inlay preparations
To enhance the bond between the enamel margin and a more heavily filled (ie Packable) resin composite at the bottom of a class II
Ceramic repairs in non-stress bearing situations
Repair of bisacryl composite temporary restorations
When would you not use flowable resin composite?
High stress bearing situations, for example the restoration of tooth wear on the incisor edge
Restoration of anything larger than a small class I cavity
Restoration of any class II cavities
Where food moisture control cannot be achieved
What do you use to apply flowable resin composite?
Blunt ended needle
