15
Q

What is the filler loading like of flowable composite?

A

Lower filler loading

Some products have compensated by increased filler particle size

16
Q

Compare universal and flowable composite?

A

Flowable composites are:

Not as strong in comparison

Are not as wear resistant

Exhibit greater polymerisation shrinkage upon curing

Lower modulus of elasticity so increased ability to flex during function and better to withstand flexural forces

17
Q

Do flowable composites act more like the filler or the resin?

A

They behave more like the resin

18
Q

When would you use flowable resin based composite on a class I?

A

Small class I cavities

Involving enamel or only a small amount of dentine in permanent or deciduous dentition

19
Q

When would you use flowable resin based composite on a class V cavity?

A

Especially when caused by non-carious tooth surface loss (NCTSL)

20
Q

What cavity classifications would you use flowable resin composite?

A

Class I
Class V

21
Q

A restoration with deficient ditched amalgam margins, what resin would you use to repair it?

A

Flowable resin

22
Q

When else would you use flowable resin composite?

A

As a lining material especially when Packable composure is to be used to restore the cavity

Blocking out of undercuts in inlay preparations

To enhance the bond between the enamel margin and a more heavily filled (ie Packable) resin composite at the bottom of a class II

Ceramic repairs in non-stress bearing situations

Repair of bisacryl composite temporary restorations

23
Q

When would you not use flowable resin composite?

A

High stress bearing situations, for example the restoration of tooth wear on the incisor edge

Restoration of anything larger than a small class I cavity

Restoration of any class II cavities

Where food moisture control cannot be achieved

24
Q

What do you use to apply flowable resin composite?

A

Blunt ended needle

25
Q

When do you apply a fissure sealant?

A

Placed on the occlusal surface of newly erupted posterior teeth

26
Q

What is the purpose of fissure sealants?

A

Occludes the fissure pattern and delays or prevents the onset of fissure caries

27
Q

What is a precursor to flowable material?

A

Fissure sealant

28
Q

What is the effect of low loading of filler particles added to fissure sealants?

A

To aid manipulation

As a means of identifying the sealant once it has been placed

29
Q

What can make some fissure sealants transparent? and what is the purpose?

A

Absence of filler

Can see the caries

30
Q

In some fissure sealants, what colour are they applied as and what do they change colour to?

A

Apply as link and change colour when light cured

31
Q

Can resin systems release fluoride?

A

Yes

32
Q

What is the effect of a higher volume of filler?

A

More viscous

33
Q

What are the benefits of the Packable resin based composites?

A

Increased fracture resistance

34
Q

What are the difficulties with Packable resin based composite?

A

Difficult to achieve an homogenous paste at higher filler loadings whilst ensuring that there is sufficient resin to bind the filler particles together

Increase tendency to create voids along the cavity walls and between each increment of material

35
Q

What is an example of a Packable resin composite?

A

P60

It is a hybrid

36
Q

When do you use bulk fills?

A

Placing in increments

37
Q

What is the max depth of each increment?

A

4 mm

38
Q

Why use bulk fills?

A

So that stresses which occur as a result of polymerisation shrinkage may be markedly reduced
