Q

What is the contact hypothesis?

A

The contact hypothesis suggests that the level of prejudice may depend upon the extent and nature of interactions between groups (Allport 1954). Specifically, whites’ experiences with members of a minority group who are equal in status and are working toward a common goal should lessen whites’ prejudice by both directly reducing negative attitudes and weakening the majority individuals’ commitment to inaccurate stereotypes.
