What does the dissimilarity index measure?
The “Dissimilarity” index is a measure of the proportion of black people (or non-blacks) that would need to move across census tracts to get a perfectly even proportion of black residents across the entire MSA.
Blacks overwhelmingly prefer __-__ area
They find that blacks overwhelmingly prefer 50-50 area, a density far too high for most whites – but their preferences are driven not by solidarity or neutral ethnocentrism but by fears of white hostility. (Krysan & Farley 2002)
What role does white preferences play in neighborhood stratification?
White preferences play a key role, since whites are reluctant to move into neighborhoods with more than a few blacks. (Krysan & Farley 2002)
Overall Whites are __ to __ times more likely to move out of neighborhoods with 10% or more Black residents than they are neighborhoods that have 10% or fewer Black residents
