Research Methods - Variables Flashcards
Independent variables
Manipulated/changed in an experiment
Dependent variables
Variable being measured by experimenter
Extraneous variables
Any variable that isn’t the IV that affects the DV (not changed by the researcher)
Confounding variables
Type of EV that varies within the IV systematically
Participant variables
Individual differences between participants that may affect DV
Situational variables
Features of the experimental situation that may affect DV
Demand characteristics
Participants changing their behaviour/responses to please the researcher
Researcher effects
Researcher’s behaviour affecting the results
Randomisation
Using chance methods to control for bias effects when designing experiment
Standardisation
Using identical formalised procedures & instructions for all participants
Operationalisation
Measurement of clearly defined variables
