Research Methods Flashcards
What is a Non directional hypothesis
A prediction which states that there will be a difference between conditions or that there will be a correlation but which does not state which direction the difference will go in
What is a directional hypothesis?
A prediction which states the direction of the differences between two conditions or which states the direction of any correlation between two variables
What is independent groups experimental design?
Different participant in each condition of the iv.
Give a strength of independent groups
There is no chance of learning/improvement (practice effects) between the first time they do the experiment and the second time.
What is a weakness of independent groups?
There may be differences between the people in the groups - participant variables
What is repeated measures experimental design?
Each participant does both conditions of the independent variable
Give a strength of repeated measures
It controls differences between participants’s
Requires less participants
What is a weakness of repeated measures?
It takes longer
There may be order effects - may be better because of practice
What is matched pairs experimental design?
Each person only does one condition of the independent variable
What is a directional (one tailed) hypothesise?
States the direction of difference between two conditions
