Separation
Short term, temporary separation from an attachment figure

When an attachment has formed but had been broken either temporarily or permanently.

When a child has been prevented from forming attachment

Residential care in an orphanage, children’s home with other children and paid members of staff

What is protest?
Child separated from their career they cry, scream, struggle, cling, appear afraid, angry
What is despair
Child stops struggling, apathy, not engaging with others, can’t be comforted, rocking, thumb sucking.
Detachment
Child responds to other, but in an unemotional way. Don’t show interest to parent.
Maternal deprivation hypothesis?
Disruption of the attachment bond with the mother, leads to serious, permanent damage to emotional and intellectual development
