Research Methods Flashcards
What is a dependent variable?
The thing we measure
What is an independent variable?
The thing we change
What is an extraneous variable?
Something that might affect the results
What is a confounding variable?
Something that did affect the results
What is repeated measure design?
one group of participants but exposes them to different conditions
What is independent measures?
Two or more separate groups, one condition for eaxh
What is matched pairs?
Two or more groups where participants are matched together
What does reliability mean?
The ability to repeat a study and obtain the same result
What is a pilot study?
A small scale trial of the research design, tried out in a few people before doing the real thing
Why are pilot studies used?
To identify any problems with the design and correct anything that does not work
What is internal validity?
The extent to which the method used really measures what it intended to measure
What is external validity?
The extent to which the findings can be generalised to the real world
What are demand characteristics?
Participants altering their behaviour to either help or hinder the research
What is peer review?
Where experts in the same field assess the quality/ validity of the research before it goes to publication
What is Test-retest reliability?
When a test is administered and then repeated.
