psychology def
the scientific study of human thoughts feelings and behaviors
scientific method
identify research topic hypothesis method collect data analyse data interpret results report findings
Psuedoscience
A pseudoscience is any non‐scientific approach to studying human behaviour that may produce biased or unreliable results
phrenology
explored the relationship between the skull’s surface features and an individual’s personality characteristics
barnum effect
ppl are more likely to believe a statement about themselves if it is positive, vague and general
Empirical evidence
data collected through systematic observations and/or carefully constructed observations. this MINIMISES chance for bias, errors and faulty conclusions.
population
refers to the entire group of research interest, and to which the researcher will wish to apply/generalise their research findings.
sample
A sample is the research participants who were selected from the larger population.
expiriment
an experiment is used to test a cause and effect relationship between two particular variables.
ev
any variables other than the IV that can cause an unwanted change in the DV. Are identified prior to the research and are controlled in the research design
CV
Confounding variables are like extraneous variables; however, it is not possible to determine which variable caused the change in the DV.
