research into coding Flashcards
what did Baddeley 1966 research
transforming information from one type of coding to another, using differences in similar and dissimilar words
what is does acoustically mean
when the words sound the same e.g bound, sound, ground
what does semantically mean
when words have similar meanings e.g happy, joyful
what did Jacobs 1887 research
measured memory on digit spans- the participant was given digits to memorise and recall in order out loud
what did Miller 1956 find
items usually came in sevens- the STM span is 7 +/- 2, people usually use chunking to memorise groups of things
what was Peterson 1959 study
a lab experiment where 24 participants had to recall trigrams, to prevent rehearsal participants were given an interference task until they saw a red lights appear
what were the different durations between recall (peterson)
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 seconds
what were the findings of peterson 1959
the longer the interval the less trigrams were recalled, after 3 seconds 80% were remembered, after 18 seconds 10% were remembered
STM has a limited capacity when rehearsal is prevented
what was Bahrick (1975) study
392 participants (17-74) from ohio had to recall their yearbook photos from two groups
what were the two different groups in Bahrick 1975
photo recognition text from a group of pictures
-within 15 years 90% accuracy
-after 48 years 15% accuracy
free recall
-within 15 years 60% accuracy
-after 48 years 30% accuracy
what was the outcome of Bahrick 1975
the duration of the LTM can last a lifetime
what were the results for each interval
3s- 80%
6s- 55%
9s- 30%
12s- 25%
15s- 15%
18s- 10%
