cognitive interiew Flashcards
what is the cognitive interview
a police technique for interviewing witnesses of a crime, which increases them to recreate the original context in order to increase the accessibility of stored information
why is the cognitive interview important
it improves eyewitness of questioning witnesses in police interviews and applies findings of psychological findings to this area
what did Fisher and Geiselman (1992) study
reviewed memory literature- people remember things better if they are provided with retrieval cues
what are the four steps to the cognitive interview
-report everything
-reinstatement of context
-change order
-change perspective
reporting everything
witnesses are asked to report every detail, this way unimportant details could act as retrieval cues for key information about the event
reinstating context
the interviewer tries to mentally reinstate the environmental and personal context of the crime for the witness e.g general activities, the weather, sights, sounds
why is changing the event in order important
it allows the witness to produce an event in how we expect it to happen rather in the way it actually occurred, changing/ reversing the order is encouraged to help recall as much as possible
