long term memory Flashcards
what are the three types of LTM
episodic, semantic, procedural
who proposed the different types of LTM
Tulving (1985)
what is episodic memory
refers to our ability to recall events from our life, the memories are complex and are ‘time-stamped’. the memory will include several different elements to produce a single memory e.g people, place. a conscious effort is needed to recall these memories
what is semantic memory
contains our knowledge of the world, it is less personal and more about facts we all share, it contains a large amount of information which is constantly being added to
-e.g what an orange tastes like, where the eiffel tower is
what is procedural memory
memory for actions or skills, we can recall these memories with little effort or conscious awareness. these skills might be difficult to explain to someone else e.g driving a car becomes natural after a while, how to juggle, how to use a phone
what dud tulving say about the multi store model of memory
it is too simple
