Research Integrity Flashcards
What are the 5 key principles of research intensity?
Honesty, rigour, transparency, Independence, responsibility
What is honesty?
being accurate, open, and refraining from fabricating the truth.
What is rigour?
using scientific methods and being careful when designing, undertaking, and reporting research
What is transparency?
being clear on what the research is based on and how results were achieved.
What is Independence?
impartiality and not allowing research to be guided by non-scientific factors
What is responsibility?
conducting research scientifically and in a socially relevant way
What are common ethical issues?
- Voluntary participation
- Informed consent
- Anonymity
- Confidentiality
- Potential for harm
- Results communications
What does voluntary participation involve?
Ps are free to opt in or out at any time.
Be mindful when the relationship between research and participant are not equal e.g. doctor-patient.
What is informed consent?
Ps know purpose, benefits, risks and funding before they agree to join. They should be given time to think about it and opportunity to ask questions.
What is anonymity?
Identity of Ps is unknown and no personably identifiable data is collected. Ps can be given fake identifiers to separate personal information from the study.
What is confidentiality?
Ps information is kept hidden from anyone else. Identifiable data is anonymised. Only other researchers directly involved in the study can access study data.
What is potential for harm?
physical, social, psychological and all other types of harm are kept to an absolute minimum. Be aware of sensitive questions, stigma, injury and breaches of privacy.
What is results communication?
Ensure work is free from plagiarism or research misconduct. Results are accurately represented
