Cognitive load theory
The theory stated that digital distractions can overwhelm students’ working memory,
reducing their ability to process and retain information, ultimately impacting their
academic performance.
The Flow Theory
This
theory stated that digital distractions can disrupt students’ optimal learning state,
known as “flow,” leading to decreased engagement, motivation, and academic
performance
Attention Restoration Theory
The theory suggests that frequent exposure to digital distractions
can lead to attention fatigue, reducing students’ ability to focus and to engage in
academic tasks. Based on this theory, digital distractions have a major impact on the
student’s academic performance, especially on their ability to focus
Multitasking Theory
The theory states that frequent task-switching between academic work
and digital distractions can lead to decreased productivity and lower academic
achievement. This theory is related to the current study, considering the fact that grade
11 students are often likely to switch tasks if they don’t like what they’re doing. In addition, task switching has a negative impact on students motivation and
management skills since it leads them to be distracted and unable to concentrate on
their tasks
