Reproductive System Flashcards
What is the function of the reproductive system?
produce gametes to make offspring

What are the ovaries?
paired, oval, almond sized site of follicular development
What are the ovaries anchored by?
suspensory ligament, ovarian ligament and broad ligament
What is the outer cortex of the ovaries?
oocytes surrounded by follicle cells
What is the inner medulla of ovaries?
blood vessels, nerves, lymphatic vessels
Where are the uterine tubes found?
extend laterally from uterus to ovaries
What are the uterine tubes suspended by?
mesosalpinx (superior broad ligament)
What are the 4 segments of the uterine tubes?
infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus and uterine part
What is the shape of the infundibulum?
funnel shaped with fimbriae
What are the fimbriae?
fingerlike projections over ovaries
What is the site of fertilization?
ampulla
Where is the isthmus of the uterine tubes found?
extends medially from ampulla
What is the uterine part?
it is continuous with uterine wall
What are the layers of the wall of the uterine tubes?
mucosa, musclaris and serosa
What tissue is found in the mucosa layer of the uterine tubes?
ciliated columnar
What happens at the musclaris layer of the uterine tubes?
some peristaltic contractions
What is the uterus?
anteverted, pear-shaped muscular organ
What are the four functions of the uterus?
implantation, support embryo/fetus, eject fetus, menstruation
What are the regions of uterus?
fundus, body, isthmus and cervix
What is the fundus of the uterus?
broad superior region
What is the isthmus of the uterus?
constricted region
What is the cervix?
inferior, narrow projects into vagina
What is the endometrium?
innermost layer, varies in thickness after puberty
What is the myometrium?
middle, 3 layers of smooth muscle
What is the perimetric?
outermost, serosa
What is the vagina?
a fibromuscular tube
In the vagina, what is the mucosa layer made of?
NK stratified squamous
In the vagina, what is the musclaris layer made of?
2 layers of smooth muscle, partial skeletal muscle near opening
What is the vaginal orifice?
the opening of the vagina
What is the hymen?
folds of mucosa
What is the mons pubis?
skin anterior to pubic symphysis
What is the labia majora?
outer folds contains hair, sweat glands and sebaceous glands
What is the labia minora?
inner folds, no hair
What is the great vestibular gland?
posterior, provides lubricant
Where is the bulb of the vestibule found?
lateral to vaginal orifice
Where is the clitoris found? What is it?
superior to urethral opening, erectile body
What is the prepuce?
hood over clitoris
What is the function of the mammary glands?
produce and secrete breast milk
What is the structure of mammary glands?
lobes to lobules to alveoli
What is the flow of milk?
lactiferous ducts to lactiferous sinuses to nipple
What is the areola?
pigmented ring around nipple
What are suspensory ligaments?
attaches skin to pectoralis major
What is the primary sex organ in males?
testes
What are the accessory organs in males?
ducts and tubules from testes to penis
What does the scrotum do?
Provides cooler temperature for sperm production (3C below)
What is the raphe?
seam in the midline of the scrotum
What are the dartos muscles of the scrotum?
immediately internal smooth muscle
How many layers on found in the spermatic cord?
multiple
What does the spermatic cord contain? (5 structures)
testicular artery, pampiniform plexus, cremaster muscle, autonomic nerves, ductus deferens
What does the cremaster muscle surround?
spermatic cord
What is the function of the testes?
produce sperm and androgens
What is the structure of the testes?
lobules containing seminiferous tubules
What are the ducts from the testes to the penis?
rete testes, efferent ductules, epididymus, ductus deferens, ejaculatory duct, urethra
What is the epididymus?
comma shaped superior surface of testes
What does the epididymus store?
it stores sperm until they are motile
Where is the ductus deferens found?
within spermatic cord
How many layers are there in the muscularis layer of the ductus deferens?
3
What are the accessory glands of the male reproductive system?
seminal vesicles, prostate gland, bulbourethral glands
Where are the seminal vesicles found?
posterior surface of urinary bladder
What do the seminal vesicles secrete?
white-yellowish, viscous alkaline fluid containing fructose, prostaglandins
